The Furnishing and Curl Genes

I would like to first start off by mentioning that many families have been led to believe that an F1b is the most Allergy friendly and or sheds less than other Generations.  I can assure you that this is not the case.  Allergies and shedding can have more to do with the furnishing and curl gene than the generation of the puppy.
F1b's are 75% Poodle and 25% Golden Retriever.

For example - Multi Generational puppies can carry the exact genes as an F1b puppy.

Also keep in mind no breed of dog including doodles all do well with people that have dog allergies.  The cause of the persons allergy can be based on a number of things such as the dogs coat, dander, saliva and outdoor allergens that your dog is coming in contact with on a consistent and ongoing bases, bringing those allergens into your home and to you.

We have placed many puppies with families that have dog allergies very successfully. Please be courteous to your breeder, breeders are not Human Allergy Specialist nor do we have a crystal ball. It is your responsibility to meet the breed to determine if the average Goldendoodle will do well with your specific allergies. We do not offer meet and greets in our home to see how you or a family member would do, nor would you get a accurate assessment as we have pure bred Retrievers and Poodles and hopefully Bernedoodles, different Goldendoodle generations and a multi dogs household.

Curl Gene -   Please see pictures of our dogs below for examples of  what the different curl genes look like, keep in mind that the Furnishing gene also plays a role in coat.

Goldendoodles have three different curl gene combinations:

We will refer to the curl genes with you as shown below.

 +/+ =  Curl/Curl - Most poodles express this coat or CuC/CuC

 +/-  =  Curl/Non Curl - Most all F1 Goldendoodles express this coat or CuC/Cu

 - /-  =  Non Curl/Non Curl - Golden Retrievers express this coat or Cu/Cu

Goldendoodle puppies from F1b to Multi Generational can be any combination of these curl genes.

The Cu Locus (Curly hair) trait test reliably determines if a dog has one of the following genotypes at the Cu locus: CuC/CuC

This dog carries two copies of CuC which results in a curly coat. This dog will pass on CuC to 100% of its offspring.

Interpretation: Curly coatCuC/Cu

This dog carries one copy of CuC and one copy of Cu which results in a wavy or curly coat. This dog will pass on CuC to 50% of its offspring and Cu to 50% of its offspring.

Interpretation: Curly/Wavy coat (Carrier)Cu/Cu

This dog carries two copies of Cu and has a straight coat. This dog will pass on Cu to 100% of its offspring.

Interpretation: Straight coat

Furnishing Gene  - Please see pictures of our dogs below for examples of  what the different  furnishing genes look like, keep in mind that the curl gene also plays a role in coat.

Goldendoodles have three different Furnishing gene combinations:

We will refer to the furnishing genes with you as shown below.

F/F        =  Furnishing/Furnishing - Most poodles express this coat

F/IC      =Furnishing/Improper Coat - Most all F1 Goldendoodles express this coat

IC /IC  =  Improper Coat/Improper Coat - Golden Retrievers express this coat

Goldendoodle puppies ranging from F1b to Multi Generational can be any combination of these furnishing genes.

Improper Coat - is characterized in (Goldendoodles) by short hair on the head, face and legs. All Golden Retrievers have two copies of the Improper Coat Gene (IC/IC).

Proper Coat - is known as F/F or IC clear. Most poodles have two copies of the Proper Coat Gene (F/F).

Improper Coat /Proper Coat - is known as F/IC

(F) or Furnishings are a dominant trait, meaning that a dog only needs to have one copy of the Furnishings gene to show that physical trait. The term "Furnishings" refers to the longer mustache, eyebrows and full body coat length.

Examples of Goldendoodle Coats -

IC/IC Goldendoodles will have a Golden Retriever type coat.

F/IC and F/F Goldendoodles will have mustache, eyebrows and full body coat

(the  typical doodle look) occasionally F1 "s can have what we would refer to as a wispy  style coat .

The IC Locus (Improper coat/Furnishings) trait test reliably determines if a dog has one of the following genotypes at the IC locus:

F/F - This dog does not carry the Mutation for improper coat and will therefore have furnishings (proper coat). However, the overall coat type of this dog is dependent on the combination of this dog's genotypes at the L, Cu, and IC loci. This dog will pass F (furnishings, proper coat) on to 100% of its offspring.

Interpretation: FurnishingsF/IC

This dog carries one copy of the mutation for improper coat (IC) and one copy of F and will therefore have furnishings (proper coat). However, the overall coat type of this dog is dependent on the combination of this dog's genotypes at the L, Cu, and IC loci. This dog will pass IC (improper coat) on to 50% of its offspring and F (furnishings, proper coat) on to 50% of its offspring. Therefore, this dog can produce puppies with improper coat if bred with a dog that carries one copy (F/IC) or two copies (IC/IC) of the mutation for improper coat.

Interpretation: Furnishings (Improper coat Carrier)IC/IC

This dog carries two copies of IC and will therefore have no furnishings (improper coat). However, the overall coat type of this dog is dependent on the combination of this dog's genotypes at the L, Cu, and IC loci. This dog will pass IC (improper coat) on to 100% of its offspring and can produce puppies with improper coat if bred with a dog that carries one copy (F/IC) or two copies (IC/IC) of the mutation for improper coat.

Interpretation: No Furnishings, improper coat
